Pepperl+Fuchs P+F safety barriers, also known as safety limiters, are an important component of intrinsically safe systems.

Pepperl+Fuchs (P+F) safety barriers are mainly divided into two categories: Zener barriers and isolation barriers.

The core components of a Zener barrier are Zener diodes, current-limiting resistors, and fast-acting fuses.

Isolation barriers not only limit energy but also provide isolation. They mainly consist of a loop energy-limiting unit, a signal and power isolation unit, and a signal processing unit.

The main function of a safety barrier is to limit current and voltage, ensuring that the energy available to field instruments remains within safe limits.

Zener barrier

The circuit uses fast-acting fuses, current-limiting resistors, or voltage-limiting diodes to limit the input electrical energy, thereby ensuring the energy output to the hazardous area is controlled.

1. The installation location must have a very reliable grounding system. This requirement is obviously very stringent and difficult to guarantee in practical engineering applications.

3. Zener barriers are significantly affected by the power supply and are easily damaged by power fluctuations.

4. Because the circuit principle of Zener barriers requires the absorption of energy from the input circuit, it is prone to output instability.

⑦ When users simultaneously apply DCS and ESD, selecting a one-input, two-output safety barrier can effectively isolate the two systems and prevent mutual interference.

⑧ Loop-powered isolation safety barriers retain the advantages of active isolation safety barriers and offer the same wiring convenience as Zener barriers. They do not require a separate 24V power supply, making them particularly suitable for DCS systems directly powered by I/O cards.
