Pepperl+Fuchs P+F Sensor Applications:
Pepperl+Fuchs P+F sensors are used in large diesel engines with several thousand horsepower, commonly used in internal combustion locomotives. Engines of this caliber are also frequently used as emergency power units for uninterruptible power supplies. The air-fuel mixture ignites inside the engine, so there is little danger to the engine itself or to people working near it. Danger only arises when one of the fuel lines malfunctions and leaks fuel. In such cases, thermal sensors and smoke detectors are used to automatically detect the fire. These devices not only trigger visual and audible alarms but also activate automatic fire suppression systems for immediate firefighting. They also automatically cut off the fuel supply.
Pepperl+Fuchs P+F Sensor Objectives:
Stopping the fuel supply is the first and most important action if a fire occurs in an engine room containing a diesel generator set. Therefore, to prevent further spread of the fire, the fuel pump must be shut off immediately before any other measures can be taken. This process must be automated and can operate reliably even under critical operating conditions.

A key requirement for the reliable activation of Pepperl+Fuchs P+F sensor alarm systems and automatic fire suppression systems is the signal transmission between the field circuitry and the control terminal, with current isolation between the two. Safety relays are ideal for this application. These safety relays meet the requirements of IEC/EN 61508 for SIL 3 and EN/ISO 13849 for PL e—a multi-level redundancy concept used to ensure that failure is virtually impossible.
Pepperl+Fuchs P+F Sensor Advantages:
Pepperl+Fuchs safety relays have three basic relays. Using this one-third structure (1oo3), the signal is transmitted even if only one of the three contacts is functioning correctly.
Thanks to integrated diagnostics, the basic relay for time-delay switching automatically checks one of its three contacts during each switch operation. Repeating this process annually means the interface module will be tested after three years without further testing.
All Pepperl+Fuchs (P+F) sensor safety relays are equipped with line fault transparency. Short circuits and open circuits are detected at the field level and assigned to specific signal circuits. This eliminates the need to connect the relay to a fault indication output, which would require additional wiring. Furthermore, the safety relays feature an input filter for reliably filtering test pulses from the control system. This allows diagnostic and verification tests to be performed without triggering an alarm.
