A Camozzi cylinder is a cylindrical metal component that guides a piston in linear reciprocating motion. In an engine cylinder, the working fluid expands, converting thermal energy into mechanical energy; in a compressor cylinder, gas is compressed by the piston, increasing its pressure. The housing of turbines, rotary piston engines, etc., is also commonly referred to as a "cylinder." Applications of cylinders include: printing (tension control), semiconductors (spot welding machines, chip grinding), automation control, robotics, etc. In the automotive industry, Karl Benz and Daimler, when designing and manufacturing automobiles, both coincidentally used engines with only one cylinder. Currently, domestically produced vehicles such as the Huali minivan, older Xiali models, Geely Haoqing, Alto, and Flyer all use 3-cylinder engines.

The thrust and pull forces on the piston rod are determined based on the required working force. Therefore, when selecting a cylinder, the output force should have a slight margin. If the cylinder diameter is too small, the output force will be insufficient, and the cylinder will not work properly; however, if the cylinder diameter is too large, it will not only make the equipment bulky and costly, but also increase air consumption, resulting in energy waste. In fixture design, force-multiplying mechanisms should be used as much as possible to reduce the size of the cylinder.

The following is the formula for calculating the theoretical output force of a cylinder:

F: Theoretical output force of the cylinder (kgf)

F′: Output force at 85% efficiency (kgf) -- (F′=F×85%)

D: Cylinder diameter (mm)

P: Working pressure (kgf/cm2)

Example: What is the theoretical output force of a cylinder with a diameter of 340mm and a working pressure of 3kgf/cm2? What is the actual output force?

Connect P and D, and find the points on F and F′, we get:

F=2800kgf; F′=2300kgf

When selecting the cylinder diameter in engineering design, it can be found in Table 1-1 based on the operating pressure and the magnitude of the theoretical thrust or pull force.

Example: A cylinder operates at a pressure of 5 kgf/cm², and its thrust upon extension is 132 kgf (cylinder efficiency is 85%). What cylinder diameter should be selected?

● From the cylinder's thrust of 132 kgf and efficiency of 85%, the theoretical thrust can be calculated as F = F' / 85% = 155 (kgf).

● From the operating pressure of 5 kgf/cm² and the theoretical thrust, a cylinder with a diameter of Φ63 will meet the requirements.
