The ATOS proportional flow valve is a combination of a proportional solenoid and a flow valve. It is a manual adjustment device that replaces the throttle valve or speed control valve with a proportional solenoid. The opening of the throttle valve is changed by inputting an electrical signal, thereby regulating the flow of the system.

An ATOS proportional solenoid combined with a throttle valve is called a proportional throttle valve; combined with a speed control valve, it is called a proportional speed control valve; and combined with a one-way speed control valve, it is called a proportional one-way speed control valve.
Diagram of the working principle of an ATOS proportional speed control valve. The main valve in the diagram is a pressure-compensated speed control valve. The throttle valve core 3 is connected to the push rod 2 of the proportional solenoid 1. When an electrical signal is input, the throttle valve core 3, under the electromagnetic force of the proportional solenoid 1, balances with the spring 5 at the left end of the valve core through the push rod 2. At this time, the corresponding throttle opening h is a constant value. When different signal currents are input, different throttle openings occur. Because the differential pressure reducing valve 4 ensures that the pressure difference between the inlet and outlet of the throttle valve remains constant, the flow rate through the corresponding throttle opening is also constant. If the input signal current changes continuously and proportionally, or according to a certain program, the flow rate controlled by the electro-hydraulic proportional speed control valve will also change continuously and proportionally, or to a certain extent, to achieve speed regulation of the actuator.
An application example of the ATOS electro-hydraulic proportional valve is its use in the feed system of a turret lathe. The diagram shows a system diagram using ordinary speed control valves to achieve three feed speeds. Three speed control valves are connected in parallel in the oil circuit, and a non-standard three-position four-way solenoid directional valve is used to control the stepped speed regulation of the process. With the electro-hydraulic proportional speed control valve, multiple speed controls can be achieved simply by inputting a signal current corresponding to each speed. Comparing the two hydraulic systems, the latter obviously has fewer hydraulic components and is simpler, but its electrical system is more complex.
ATOS electro-hydraulic proportional valves are mainly used for speed control in the hydraulic systems of multi-station machine tools, injection molding machines, and imitation silk cotton, and can also be used in remote speed control and automatic speed control systems. When the input signal current is zero, the output flow rate is zero, thus it can be used as a switch to cut off the oil circuit.
In other words, the main valve of the servo valve is controlled by the output pressure of the pilot valve, which in turn receives pressure from the servo valve's inlet port (p). If the pressure at port p is insufficient, the pilot valve cannot output enough pressure to actuate the main valve spool.
We know that when the load is zero, if the four-way spool valve is open, the pressure at port p = the pressure at port t + the pressure loss at the valve port (ignoring other pressure losses in the oil circuit). If the pressure loss at the valve port is very small, and the pressure at port t is zero, then the pressure at port p is insufficient to supply the pilot valve to actuate the main valve spool, and the entire servo valve fails. Therefore, the servo valve's orifice is made relatively small, ensuring a certain pressure loss even when the orifice is fully open to maintain the normal operation of the pilot valve.

ATOS proportional valve flow control can be divided into two types: one is on/off control: either fully open or fully closed, the flow is either at its maximum or minimum, with no intermediate state, such as ordinary solenoid direct-flow valves, solenoid directional valves, and electro-hydraulic directional valves. The other is continuous control: the valve port can be opened to any degree as needed, thereby controlling the flow rate. These valves can be manually controlled, such as throttle valves, or electrically controlled, such as proportional valves and servo valves. Therefore, the purpose of using proportional valves or servo valves is to achieve throttling control of flow rate through electrical control (of course, pressure control can also be achieved through structural modifications). Since it is throttling control, there will inevitably be energy loss. Servo valves differ from other valves in that their energy loss is greater because they require a certain flow rate to maintain the operation of the pre-stage control circuit.
