The purpose of using proportional valves or servo valves is to achieve flow throttling control through electronic means (of course, pressure control can also be achieved through structural modifications). Since it is throttling control, there will inevitably be energy loss. The difference between servo valves and other valves is that its energy loss is greater because it requires a certain flow to maintain the operation of the pre-stage control circuit.

The Rexroth proportional valve has two chambers, each containing a piston and a valve. The valve has two chambers at each end: the right chamber is connected to the inlet and then to the master cylinder outlet via a tubing; the left chamber is connected to the outlet and then to the rear wheel brake lines via a pipeline. The proportional valve works as follows: When not braking, the piston is at its left extreme position under the thrust F applied by the load-sensing spring through a lever. At this point, the valve opens, opening the input and output oil circuits.

The Rexroth proportional valve uses the change in distance between the vehicle body and the axle (external force) to change the spring preload. As the vehicle load increases, it adjusts accordingly, achieving a near-ideal braking force distribution under any load condition. It is installed on the pipeline between the master cylinder and the rear wheel brake cylinders and consists of a housing, piston, valve, spring, etc. The oil inlet of the housing is connected to the oil outlet of the master cylinder, and the oil outlet is connected to the wheel brake calipers. When the external force is small, the plunger of the load-sensing proportional valve is pushed to the rightmost position under the spring preload, connecting the two ports and equalizing the pressure in the master and wheel cylinders. When the external force exceeds the spring preload, it forces the plunger to the left, causing it to contact the valve and close it, cutting off the flow from the master cylinder to the wheel cylinders. If the external pressure continues to increase, the plunger will move to the right, disengaging from the valve and reopening it, connecting the master and wheel cylinders again. This repeated action of the proportional valve continuously adjusts the hydraulic pressure of the wheel cylinders, thus continuously adjusting the rear wheel braking force. The proportional valve regulates the required flow rate. To achieve multiple output forces and multiple speeds, this traditional pneumatic control system requires multiple pressure reducing valves, throttle valves, and directional valves. This not only increases the number of components, raising costs and complicating the system, but also necessitates manual pre-adjustment of many components. Electro-proportional valve control is a type of continuous control, characterized by output that changes proportionally to input, with a certain proportional relationship between the two. Proportional control can be divided into open-loop and closed-loop control.

REXROTH Proportional Valve 4WRD Series

Rexroth proportional valves are components with a threaded electromagnetic proportional cartridge mounted on an integrated hydraulic circuit block. These helical cartridge valves are characterized by their flexibility, cost-effectiveness, and low price, and have become increasingly widely used in engineering machinery in recent years. Commonly used helical cartridge proportional valves include two-way, three-way, four-way, and multi-way types. Two-way proportional valves are primarily proportional throttle valves, often used in conjunction with other components to form a composite valve for controlling flow and pressure. Three-way proportional valves are primarily proportional pressure reducing valves, and are also widely used in mobile mechanical hydraulic systems, primarily operating the pilot circuit of hydraulically operated multi-way valves. Three-way proportional pressure reducing valves can replace traditional manual pressure reducing pilot valves, offering greater flexibility and higher control precision. A proportional servo-controlled manual multi-way valve, as shown in Figure 1, can be manufactured. Different input signals and pressure reducing valves cause the output piston to have different pressures or flow rates, thereby achieving proportional control of the valve core displacement. Four-way or multi-way screw-type proportional valves can achieve individual control of the working device. Spool valves, also known as distribution valves, are one of the most basic components of mobile mechanical hydraulic systems, capable of achieving both directional and flow regulation. Electro-hydraulic spool valves are relatively ideal electro-hydraulic conversion control elements. They retain the basic functions of manual multi-way valves and add position feedback proportional servo operation and load sensing control methods. They are a replacement product for distribution valves in engineering machinery. A proportional valve uses a proportional electromagnet inside the valve to generate a corresponding action from the input voltage signal, causing the valve core to displace, changing the valve port size, and thus completing the pressure and flow output element proportional to the input voltage. Valve core displacement can also be fed back mechanically, hydraulically, or electrically. Electro-hydraulic proportional valves offer numerous advantages, including diverse types and forms, ease of integration into various electro-hydraulic systems controlled by electricity and computers, high control precision, flexible installation and use, and strong resistance to contamination. Their application areas are increasingly expanding. Recent research and development of cartridge-type proportional valves and proportional multi-way valves fully consider the characteristics of engineering machinery, incorporating functions such as pilot control, load sensing, and pressure compensation. Their emergence is of great significance to the overall technological advancement of mobile hydraulic machinery. In particular, they demonstrate promising application prospects in areas such as electrically controlled pilot operation, wireless remote control, and wired remote control.

Rexroth proportional valves offer performance between servo valves and proportional valves.

Rexroth proportional valves are a type of proportional valve used to control flow rate and direction.

Extended Information---Automatic control of electro-hydraulic proportional valves can be divided into intermittent control and continuous control. Intermittent control is also known as on/off control. Pneumatic control systems use on/off directional valves with low operating frequencies to control the opening and closing of the air path. Pressure reducing valves regulate the required pressure, and throttle valves regulate the required flow rate. Traditional pneumatic control systems require multiple pressure reducing valves, throttle valves, and directional valves to achieve multiple output forces and speeds. This not only increases the number of components, raising costs and complicating the system, but also necessitates manual adjustment of many components beforehand. Electro-proportional valve control is a continuous control method, characterized by output varying with input, exhibiting a proportional relationship between the two. Proportional control can be open-loop or closed-loop.

Rexroth Proportional Valve Structure and Principle

When the input signal to the Rexroth proportional valve increases, the supply solenoid pilot valve 1 reverses, while the exhaust solenoid pilot valve 7 remains in the reset state. The supply pressure then enters the pilot chamber 5 from the SUP port through valve 1. The pilot chamber pressure rises, acting on the diaphragm 2, opening the supply valve core 4 connected to diaphragm 2 and closing the exhaust valve core 3, generating output pressure. This output pressure is fed back to the control loop 8 via pressure sensor 6. Here, a rapid comparison and correction is performed with the target value until the output pressure is proportional to the input signal, thus demonstrating that the output pressure changes proportionally to the change in the input signal. Because there is no nozzle-baffle mechanism, the valve is insensitive to impurities and has high reliability.

REXROTH Proportional Valve Features

1) Enables stepless adjustment of pressure and speed, avoiding the shock phenomenon during switching of normally open on/off valves.

2) Enables remote and program control.

3) Compared to intermittent control, the system is simplified, with a significant reduction in components.

4) Compared to hydraulic proportional valves, it is smaller, lighter, simpler in structure, and lower in cost, but its response speed is much slower than hydraulic systems, and it is more sensitive to load changes.

5) Low power consumption, low heat generation, and low noise.

6) No fire hazard and no environmental pollution. Less affected by temperature changes.
