American MOOG servo valves are relatively complex in structure, expensive, and require high-quality and clean oil. New servo valves are attempting to overcome these drawbacks, such as those utilizing electrostrictive elements, which greatly simplify the structure. Another direction is the development of special working oils (such as electroviscous oils). These oils can change their viscosity under electromagnetic influence. This property allows for direct control of oil flow via electrical signals.

MOOG servo valves are primarily used as actuators in electro-hydraulic servo systems (see Hydraulic Servo Systems). In servo systems, hydraulic actuators, compared to electric and pneumatic actuators, offer advantages such as faster response, higher power output per unit weight, smoother transmission, and stronger anti-interference capabilities. Conversely, electrical components are often used for signal transmission and characteristic correction in servo systems. Therefore, modern high-performance servo systems also employ electro-hydraulic methods, and servo valves are essential components of such systems.

MOOG servo valves primarily refer to electro-hydraulic servo valves, which, upon receiving an electrical analog signal, output modulated flow and pressure. They act as both electro-hydraulic conversion elements and power amplifiers, converting low-power, weak electrical input signals into high-power hydraulic energy (flow and pressure) output.

MOOG Servo Valve

This servo valve is a two-stage valve. The first stage is a nozzle-flange type, with its outlet pressure controlled by a control signal. The second stage is a spool valve type, actuating the pressure from the control stage to the brake cylinder. When no signal is applied, the pressure nozzle outlet oil pressure causes the servo valve baffle to rest against the return oil nozzle. At this time, the oil pressure at the pressure port acts on the spool valve core, directly connecting the brake port and the metering oil port. The brake port pressure is equal to the metering oil pressure controlled by the pilot. When the wheel angular velocity detects a deviation between the taxiing speed and the reference taxiing speed, the torque motor receives the deviation signal. The torque motor then drives the baffle to deflect towards the pressure nozzle, causing the oil pressure acting on the upper end of the valve core to decrease. Under the action of the oil pressure at the lower end of the valve core, the valve core moves upward, closing the metering pressure oil port. This results in a decrease in the control port pressure. When the control port pressure drops to a certain value, the corresponding braking pressure is applied.
