HIRSCHMANN switches are devices that perform information exchange functions in communication systems.

In computer network systems, the concept of switching represents an improvement over shared operating modes. A hub is a type of shared device. The hub itself cannot identify the destination address. When host A on the same local area network transmits data to host B, the data packet is transmitted in a broadcast manner on a network based on a hub architecture. Each terminal determines whether to receive the packet by verifying the address information in the packet header. In this mode, only one set of data frames can be transmitted on the network at a time; if a collision occurs, a retry is required. This method is called shared network bandwidth.

HIRSCHMANN switches offer full-duplex, half-duplex, and full-duplex/half-duplex adaptive transmission modes.

Full-duplex in HIRSCHMANN switches means that the switch can simultaneously send and receive data, both synchronously. This is similar to making a phone call, where you can speak and hear the other person simultaneously. Most current switches support full-duplex. The advantage of full-duplex is its low latency and high speed.

When discussing full-duplex, we must mention its closely related concept: half-duplex. Half-duplex means that only one action occurs at a time. A simple example is a narrow road where only one car can pass at a time. If two cars are traveling towards each other, only one can pass at a time, and the other can only go first. This example vividly illustrates the principle of half-duplex. Early walkie-talkies and early hubs were products that used half-duplex. With continuous technological advancements, half-duplex will gradually fade into history.

Broadly speaking, network switches are divided into two types: WAN switches and LAN switches. WAN switches are mainly used in the telecommunications field, providing a basic communication platform. LAN switches are used in local area networks to connect terminal devices such as PCs and network printers. Based on transmission media and transmission speed, they can be divided into Ethernet switches, Fast Ethernet switches, Gigabit Ethernet switches, FDDI switches, ATM switches, and Token Ring switches, etc. From an application scale perspective, switches can be categorized into enterprise-level switches, departmental-level switches, and workgroup switches. The classification criteria vary among manufacturers. Generally, enterprise-level switches are rack-mounted, departmental-level switches can be rack-mounted (with fewer slots) or fixed-configuration, while workgroup-level switches are fixed-configuration (with simpler functionality). On the other hand, considering application scale, as backbone switches, switches supporting over 500 data points for large enterprises are considered enterprise-level switches, those supporting under 300 data points for medium-sized enterprises are departmental-level switches, and those supporting under 100 data points are workgroup-level switches. This article refers to LAN switches.

Other information on HIRSCHMANN switches:

HIRSCHMANN switches are a general term for technologies that, according to the needs of information transmission at both ends of a communication system, use manual or automated methods to send the information to the appropriate route. Based on their operating location, they can be divided into WAN switches and LAN switches. A WAN switch is a device that performs information exchange functions in a communication system.

In computer network systems, the concept of switching improved the shared working mode. A hub is a type of shared device. The hub itself cannot identify the destination address. When host A on the same local area network transmits data to host B, the data packet is transmitted in a broadcast manner on a network with a hub architecture. Each terminal determines whether to receive the packet by verifying the address information in the packet header. That is, in this working mode, only one set of data frames can be transmitted on the network at a time; if a collision occurs, it must be retried. This method is called sharing network bandwidth. In simple terms, ordinary switches do not have management functions; one line enters, and the other interfaces are connected to computers. HIRSCHMANN full product line,
