Hirschmann Electronics, located in Neckartenzlingen, Germany, offers a range of products including mobile transmission and reception systems using analog and digital broadcast television transmission technologies, enterprise and industrial network solutions, and fieldbus systems. Founded in 1924 by Richard Hirschmann, the father of the "banana plug," the company has grown from a one-man operation into a global leader in modern communications over 81 years.

Company History
Since January 1, 1997, Hirschmann has been part of the Rheinmetall Group's electronics division as a member of Aditron AG, developing and manufacturing new products in automotive electronics, multimedia communication systems, and automated network systems. On March 24, 2004, Hirschmann joined the well-known financial investment company HgCapital Group.
Hirschmann's technological strengths are primarily reflected in automotive communication systems, multimedia electronics, automated network solutions, and electronic control systems. To clarify the company structure, a multimedia division, Hirschmann Multimedia Electronics, was established in early January 2003. Hirschmann has since acquired its former sister company, PAT, located in Ettlingen, whose electronic control systems division is now part of the Hirschmann Group.
Full-duplex operation of Hirschmann switches means that the switch can simultaneously send and receive data, like making a phone call where you can speak and hear the other person at the same time. Current switches all support full-duplex. The advantages of full-duplex are low latency and high speed.
When discussing full-duplex, we must mention its closely related concept, "half-duplex." Half-duplex means that only one action occurs at a time. A simple example is a narrow road where only one car can pass at a time. If two cars are traveling towards each other, only one can pass at a time, and the other can only proceed after the first car has passed. This example vividly illustrates the principle of half-duplex. Early walkie-talkies and hubs were half-duplex devices. With technological advancements, half-duplex switching has gradually become obsolete.
Broadly speaking, network switches are divided into two types: WAN switches and LAN switches. WAN switches are mainly used in the telecommunications field, providing a basic communication platform. LAN switches, on the other hand, are used in local area networks to connect terminal devices such as PCs and network printers. Based on transmission media and speed, they can be categorized as Ethernet switches, Fast Ethernet switches, Gigabit Ethernet switches, FDDI switches, ATM switches, and Token Ring switches. Based on application scale, they can be divided into enterprise-level switches, departmental switches, and workgroup switches. The classification standards vary among manufacturers. Generally, enterprise-level switches are rack-mounted, departmental switches can be rack-mounted (with fewer slots) or fixed-configuration, while workgroup switches are fixed-configuration (with simpler functionality). On the other hand, in terms of application scale, when used as backbone switches, switches supporting over 500 data points for large enterprises are considered enterprise-level switches, switches supporting fewer than 300 data points for medium-sized enterprises are considered department-level switches, and switches supporting fewer than 100 data points are considered workgroup-level switches. The switches discussed in this article refer to local area network (LAN) switches.
