Differences in Mechanisms of ATOS Pilot-Operated Relief Valves

The pilot valve section of a pilot-operated relief valve has a smaller structural size, and the pressure adjusting spring does not need to be very strong, making pressure adjustment easier. However, because the pilot-operated relief valve only takes effect after both the pilot valve and the main valve have actuated, its response is not as sensitive as that of a direct-acting relief valve.

Compared to the three-section concentric structure, the two-section concentric structure has the following characteristics: ① The main valve core only requires concentricity with the valve sleeve and main valve seat, eliminating the need for a valve cover, thus simplifying the structure and making processing and assembly easier. ② Large flow area results in a smaller main valve opening height for the same flow rate; or, for the same opening height, a larger flow capacity, thus allowing for smaller size and lighter weight. ③ The main valve core and valve sleeve can be standardized, facilitating mass production.

The Italian ATOS pilot-operated relief valve has various structures. Figure 6.9 shows a typical three-section concentric pilot-operated relief valve, consisting of a pilot valve and a main valve. The valve principle is shown in Figure 6.10.

In the Italian ATOS pilot-operated relief valve diagram, the cone-shaped pilot valve 1, the damping orifice (fixed throttling orifice) 5 on the main valve core, and the pressure regulating spring 9 together constitute the pilot stage half-bridge pressure-dividing negative feedback control, responsible for providing the main stage command pressure P2, after being stabilized by the pilot valve, to the upper chamber of the main valve core 6. The main valve core is the comparator of the main control circuit. Its upper end face receives the command force P2A2, while its lower end face serves as the pressure measuring surface of the main circuit, receiving the feedback force P1A1. The resultant force drives the valve core, adjusting the size of the overflow port, ultimately achieving the purpose of regulating and stabilizing the inlet pressure P1.
