Pneumatic control valves are divided into air-to-open and air-to-close types. Air-to-open control valves close in a fault condition, while air-to-close control valves open in a fault condition. Auxiliary equipment can be used to form position-holding valves or to enable self-locking of the control valve, meaning that the control valve maintains the valve opening degree before the fault.

Air-to-open and air-to-close modes can be achieved through combinations of positive and negative action actuators and positive and negative body valves. When using valve positioners, this can also be achieved.
