Sometimes, the German REXROTH relief valve may experience pressure regulation failure during use. There are two situations where the pressure regulation of the pilot-operated relief valve fails: one is that the pressure cannot be built up by adjusting the pressure regulating handwheel, or the pressure cannot reach the rated value; the other is that the pressure does not decrease when adjusting the handwheel, or even continues to increase. In addition to the valve core being radially jammed due to various reasons, the following are some other reasons for the pressure regulation failure: First, the damper of the main valve body (2) is blocked, and the oil pressure cannot be transmitted to the upper chamber of the main valve and the front chamber of the pilot valve, so the pilot valve loses its function of regulating the pressure of the main valve.

REXROTH Proportional Relief Valve
"Relief valve" and "safety valve" are two different names for relief valves when they function as relief valves for pressure stabilization and safety valves for pressure limiting protection. When a relief valve functions as a relief valve for pressure stabilization, it is called a relief valve; when it functions as a safety valve for pressure limiting protection, it is called a safety valve. How to distinguish them? Consider the following two aspects:
1. Examine the hydraulic circuit structure
In a fixed-displacement pump speed control system, since the pump's oil supply flow rate is constant, when the flow rate is adjusted through a throttle valve (throttle speed control process), excess flow overflows back to the oil tank from the relief valve. In this case, the relief valve serves two purposes: setting the system pressure and stabilizing the pressure during flow rate adjustment by the throttle valve. The relief valve is open (normally open) during this type of operation.
In a variable-displacement pump system, speed adjustment is achieved by changing the pump's flow rate. During this process, no excess flow overflows from the relief valve, and the relief valve is not open (normally closed). The relief valve only opens and overflows when the load pressure reaches or exceeds its set pressure, preventing the system pressure from rising further. It limits the maximum system pressure and protects the hydraulic system; in this case, the relief valve is called a safety valve.
From the above analysis, we can see that in a speed control circuit, if it's a fixed-displacement pump system, the relief valve acts as a pressure regulator; if it's a variable-displacement pump system, the relief valve acts as a pressure limiting protection, functioning as a safety valve.
2. Observe the hydraulic system's operation process.
In a fixed-displacement pump system, the actuators typically have rapid advance and working advance. During rapid advance and rapid retraction, the load is generally small and the pressure is low, so the relief valve does not open. Only when encountering an abnormally large load during rapid advance or rapid retraction does the relief valve open, limiting the system pressure and protecting the hydraulic system, functioning as a safety valve. During the working advance phase, the load is generally large and the pressure is high; the relief valve sets and stabilizes the system pressure, typically forming a pressure regulating circuit, functioning as a relief valve.
