The American MOOG servo valve consists of a permanent magnet torque motor, nozzles, baffles, valve core, valve sleeve, and control chamber (see figure). When current is applied to the input coil, the baffle moves to the right, increasing the throttling effect of the right nozzle, reducing the flow rate, and increasing the back pressure on the right side; simultaneously, it decreases the throttling effect of the left nozzle, increasing the flow rate, and decreasing the back pressure on the left side. The forces at both ends of the valve core become unbalanced, causing the valve core to move to the left. High-pressure oil flows from S to C2, delivering it to the load.

Compared to other brands of servo valves, MOOG servo valves offer advantages such as energy saving, zero pollution, strong environmental adaptability, quiet operation, durability, and minimal maintenance, making them suitable for industries with high energy, performance, and environmental requirements.
MOOG servo valves are primarily used as actuators in electro-hydraulic servo systems (see Hydraulic Servo Systems). In servo systems, hydraulic actuators, compared to electro- and pneumatic actuators, offer superior speed, higher power output per unit weight, smoother transmission, and stronger anti-interference capabilities. On the other hand, electrical components are frequently used in servo systems for signal transmission and characteristic correction. Therefore, modern high-performance servo systems also employ electro-hydraulic methods, and servo valves are essential components of such systems.
MOOG servo valves primarily refer to electro-hydraulic servo valves. Upon receiving an electrical analog signal, they output modulated flow and pressure. They are both electro-hydraulic conversion elements and power amplification elements, capable of converting low-power, weak electrical input signals into high-power hydraulic energy (flow and pressure) output.
MOOG Servo Valve Working Principle
The MOOG servo valve consists of a permanent magnet torque motor, nozzle, baffle, valve core, valve sleeve, and control chamber. When current is applied to the input coil, the baffle moves to the right, strengthening the throttling effect of the right nozzle, reducing flow, and increasing the back pressure on the right side; simultaneously, it reduces the throttling effect of the left nozzle, increasing flow and decreasing the back pressure on the left side. The forces at both ends of the valve core become unbalanced, causing the valve core to move to the left. High-pressure oil flows from S to C2, delivering it to the load. Load return oil flows through C1 through the return port and enters the oil tank. The displacement of the valve core is proportional to the input current of the torque motor. The hydraulic pressure acting on the valve core is balanced by the spring force. Therefore, in equilibrium, the differential current of the torque motor is proportional to the displacement of the valve core. If the input current is reversed, the flow rate is also reversed. The table shows the classification of servo valves.
The MOOG servo valve is a key component in electro-hydraulic servo control developed by MOOG Corporation. It is a hydraulic control valve that receives analog electrical signals and outputs modulated flow and pressure accordingly. Electro-hydraulic servo valves have advantages such as fast dynamic response, high control accuracy, and long service life, and are widely used in electro-hydraulic servo control systems in aviation, aerospace, shipbuilding, metallurgy, and chemical industries.
Founded over fifty years ago, MOOG Corporation initially designed and supplied aircraft and components. Today, the company's motion control technology is widely used in numerous markets and applications, including civil aircraft cockpits, wind turbines, Formula One racing, and medical infusion systems, effectively improving the performance of related products. The company's history originates from its founder, William C. Moog, an inventor, entrepreneur, and visionary. In 1951, Bill Moog developed the electro-hydraulic servo valve, a device that converts weak electrical pulses into precise and powerful motion. In July 1951, Bill Moog, the Art brothers, and Lugheye leased a corner of the abandoned Proner Airport in East Aurora, New York, and founded the MOOG Valve Company.
MOOG is a global designer, manufacturer, and integrator of precision motion control products and systems. Moog's high-performance systems control commercial aircraft, satellites and spacecraft, launch vehicles, industrial machinery, wind power, marine applications, and medical equipment.

In 1988, Robert T. Brady, president of MOOG's aircraft division, was appointed CEO. Sales reached $282 million in 1989. The company established operations in India in the mid-1990s. Our major acquisition was the purchase of Allied Signal's aircraft business in Torrance, California. By the end of 1999, the company's revenue exceeded $630 million.
In 2001, MOOG received a $50 million contract for the refurbishment of the Space Shuttle and transferred its listing from the American Stock Exchange to the New York Stock Exchange. We are the designer and supplier of flight control systems for Lockheed's F-35 fighter jet and a major supplier of flight control components for Boeing's 787 Dreamliner program.
In 2004, the company's revenue surpassed $900 million, and it completed another major acquisition, acquiring Litton Poly-Scientific and renaming it MOOG Components Group. The company's annual sales exceeded $1 billion.
