Italian GEFRAN Displacement Sensors

Also known as linear sensors, these are linear devices that use metal induction. The function of a sensor is to convert various measured physical quantities into electrical quantities. In production processes, displacement measurement is generally divided into measuring physical dimensions and mechanical displacement. According to the different forms of transformation of the measured variable, displacement sensors can be divided into analog and digital types. Analog sensors can be further divided into physical property type and structural type. Commonly used displacement sensors are mostly analog in structure, including potentiometer-type displacement sensors, inductive displacement sensors, synchros, capacitive displacement sensors, eddy current displacement sensors, and Hall effect displacement sensors. A significant advantage of digital displacement sensors is their ease of direct signal input to computer systems. These sensors are developing rapidly and are increasingly widely used.

Working Principle

A potentiometer-type displacement sensor converts mechanical displacement into a resistance or voltage output that has a linear or arbitrary functional relationship with it through a potentiometer element. Ordinary linear potentiometers and circular potentiometers can be used as linear and angular displacement sensors, respectively. However, potentiometers designed for displacement measurement require a definite relationship between displacement change and resistance change. The movable brush of the potentiometer-type displacement sensor is connected to the object being measured.

The displacement of the object causes a change in resistance at the moving end of the potentiometer. The amount of change in resistance reflects the magnitude of the displacement; whether the resistance increases or decreases indicates the direction of the displacement. Typically, a power supply voltage is applied to the potentiometer to convert the resistance change into a voltage output. Wire-wound potentiometers exhibit a stepped output characteristic because the resistance changes in steps per turn as the brushes move. If this type of displacement sensor is used as a displacement feedback element in a servo system, excessively large step voltages can cause system oscillations. Therefore, the resistance per turn should be minimized during potentiometer manufacturing. Another major disadvantage of potentiometer-type sensors is their susceptibility to wear. Their advantages are: simple structure, large output signal, ease of use, and low cost.

Magnetostrictive displacement sensors accurately measure the actual displacement of the tested product by precisely detecting the absolute position of a moving magnetic ring using non-contact measurement and control technology. The high accuracy and reliability of this sensor have led to its widespread application in thousands of practical cases.

Since there is no direct contact between the moving magnetic ring (which determines the position) and the sensing element, the sensor can be used in extremely harsh industrial environments and is not easily affected by oil, solutions, dust, or other contaminants. Its IP protection rating is above IP67. Furthermore, the sensor utilizes high-tech materials and advanced electronic processing technology, enabling it to operate in high-temperature, high-pressure, and high-vibration environments. The sensor outputs an absolute displacement value, ensuring data integrity even after power interruption and reconnection, without requiring re-zeroing. Because the sensing element is non-contact, repeated measurements will not cause wear, significantly improving reliability and lifespan.

The magnetostrictive displacement sensor utilizes the magnetostrictive principle, generating a strain pulse signal through the intersection of two different magnetic fields to accurately measure position. The measuring element is a waveguide, with the sensing element inside made of a special magnetostrictive material. The measurement process involves a current pulse generated within the sensor's electronic chamber. This pulse propagates within the waveguide, creating a circular magnetic field outside. When this magnetic field intersects with the magnetic field generated by a movable magnetic ring (representing position change) fitted onto the waveguide, magnetostriction generates a strain mechanical wave pulse signal within the waveguide. This strain mechanical wave pulse signal travels at a constant speed of sound and is quickly detected by the electronic chamber.

Since the propagation time of this strain mechanical wave pulse signal within the waveguide is proportional to the distance between the movable magnetic ring and the electronic chamber, this distance can be determined with high precision by measuring the time. Because the output signal is a true absolute value, not a proportional or amplified signal, there is no signal drift or value variation, and periodic recalibration is unnecessary.

The magnetostrictive displacement sensor is a high-precision, long-stroke absolute position measurement sensor manufactured based on the magnetostrictive principle. It employs a non-contact measurement method; since the moving magnetic ring used for measurement and the sensor itself have no direct contact, there is no friction or wear. Therefore, it has a long service life, strong environmental adaptability, high reliability, good safety, and is easy to automate in systems. It can operate normally even in harsh industrial environments. Furthermore, it can withstand high temperatures, high pressures, and strong vibrations, and is now widely used in the measurement and control of mechanical displacement.
