A Gavazzi relay is an electronic control device with a control system (also known as an input circuit) and a controlled system (also known as an output circuit). It is commonly used in automatic control circuits and essentially acts as an "automatic switch" that uses a smaller current to control a larger current. Therefore, it plays a role in automatic adjustment, safety protection, and circuit switching. The relay coil is represented by a rectangle in a circuit diagram; if the relay has two coils, two rectangles are drawn side-by-side.

A Gavazzi relay consists of two parts: a coil and a group of contacts. Therefore, the graphic symbol for a relay in a circuit diagram also includes two parts: a rectangle representing the coil; and a group of contact symbols representing the contact combination. When there are few contacts and the circuit is relatively simple, the contact group is often drawn directly on one side of the coil box; this method is called the concentrated representation method.
The Gavazzi relay coil is represented by a rectangle symbol in the circuit. If the relay has two coils, two rectangles are drawn side by side. The letter symbol "J" for relay is also marked inside or next to the rectangle. There are two ways to represent the relay contacts: one is to draw them directly on one side of the rectangle, which is more intuitive. Another method is to draw each contact separately in its respective control circuit according to the needs of the circuit connection. Usually, the same letter symbol is marked next to the contacts and coil of the same relay, and the contact groups are numbered for identification. There are three basic types of relay contacts:
1. Normally Open (H-type): The two contacts are open when the coil is not energized, and close when energized. Represented by the initial "H" of the pinyin for "closed".
2. Normally Closed (D-type): The two contacts are closed when the coil is not energized, and open when energized. Represented by the initial "D" of the pinyin for "closed".
3. Changeover (Z-type): This is a contact group type. This contact group has three contacts: a moving contact in the middle, and one stationary contact above and below. When the coil is not energized, the moving contact is open with one of the stationary contacts and closed with the other. When the coil is energized, the moving contact moves, making the previously open contact closed and the previously closed contact open, thus achieving the changeover purpose. Such contact groups are called changeover contacts. They are represented by the initial "z" of the pinyin for "changeover".
