FESTO Cylinder Structure

A FESTO cylinder consists of a cylinder barrel, end caps, piston, piston rod, and seals. Its internal structure is shown in the figure:

1) Cylinder Barrel

The inner diameter of the cylinder barrel determines the output force. For the piston to slide smoothly back and forth within the cylinder barrel, the surface roughness of the inner surface should reach Ra0.8μm.

FESTO and CM2 cylinders use a combination sealing ring to achieve bidirectional sealing on the piston. The piston and piston rod are connected by press-fitting, eliminating the need for nuts.

2) End Caps

The end caps have inlet and outlet ports, and some also have a buffer mechanism inside. The rod-side end caps have sealing rings and dustproof rings to prevent air leakage from the piston rod and to prevent external dust from entering the cylinder. A guide sleeve is provided on the piston rod end cap to improve the cylinder's guiding accuracy, bear a small amount of lateral load on the piston rod, reduce the downward bending of the piston rod when it extends, and extend the cylinder's service life. The guide sleeve is usually made of sintered oil-impregnated alloy or forward-inclined copper casting. End caps were previously commonly made of malleable cast iron; to reduce weight and prevent rust, aluminum alloy die casting is commonly used, and brass is sometimes used in miniature cylinders.

3) Piston

The piston is the pressure-bearing part in the cylinder. A piston seal ring is provided to prevent air leakage between the left and right chambers of the piston. Wear rings on the piston improve the cylinder's guiding performance, reduce wear on the piston seal ring, and reduce frictional resistance. Wear rings are often made of polyurethane, polytetrafluoroethylene, or fabric-reinforced synthetic resin. The width of the piston is determined by the size of the seal ring and the necessary length of the sliding part. A sliding part that is too short can easily cause premature wear and jamming. Pistons are commonly made of aluminum alloy and cast iron; small cylinder pistons are sometimes made of brass.

4) Piston Rod

The piston rod is the most important force-bearing part in the cylinder. High-carbon steel with hard chrome plating or stainless steel are typically used to prevent corrosion and improve the wear resistance of the seals.

FESTO Cylinder Types

Pneumatic actuators that convert the pressure energy of compressed gas into mechanical energy in pneumatic transmission. Cylinders come in two types: those that perform reciprocating linear motion and those that perform reciprocating oscillating motion (see figure). Cylinders that perform reciprocating linear motion can be further divided into four types: single-acting cylinders, double-acting cylinders, diaphragm cylinders, and impact cylinders.

① Single-acting cylinder: Has a piston rod at only one end. Air is supplied from one side of the piston to generate pressure, which pushes the piston to extend. It returns to its original position by a spring or its own weight.

② Double-acting cylinder: Air is alternately supplied from both sides of the piston, outputting force in one or two directions.

③ Diaphragm cylinder: Uses a diaphragm instead of a piston, outputting force in only one direction, and returns to its original position by a spring. It has good sealing performance but a short stroke.

④ Impact cylinder: This is a newer type of component. It converts the pressure energy of compressed gas into the kinetic energy of a piston moving at high speed (10-20 m/s) to do work.

⑤ Rodless Cylinder: A general term for cylinders without a piston rod. There are two main categories: magnetic cylinders and cable cylinders.

A cylinder that performs a reciprocating oscillation is called an oscillating cylinder. A vane divides the internal cavity into two, and air is alternately supplied to the two cavities, causing the output shaft to oscillate. The oscillation angle is less than 280°. Other types include rotary cylinders, pneumatic-hydraulic damping cylinders, and stepping cylinders.
