Fairchild USA - MEMS Motion Sensors

The FIS1100 is the world's leading consumer electronics IMU, offering pitch, roll, and yaw specifications, allowing you to understand the performance you'll achieve before building your first device. The FIS1100 is bundled with Fairchild's high-performance 9-axis sensor fusion – XKF3™ – the industry's most robust and accurate solution, designed by Fairchild's Xsens sensor fusion software development center.

The FIS1100 includes the AttitudeEngine, a purpose-specific vector DSP motion processor capable of processing inertial data at high rates while outputting to the host processor at lower rates required by the end application. In various applications such as walking navigation, this product reduces the output data rate by 10 to 30 times compared to conventional IMUs without an onboard motion processor. Therefore, this product eliminates the need for high-frequency motion data interruptions, allowing the system processor to remain in sleep mode for longer periods and resulting in extended battery life, thus simplifying system integration.

Fairchild's SuperFET™ II MOSFET family extends superjunction technology to the high-voltage power MOSFET portfolio. This technology enables Fairchild to deliver robust and superior body diode performance for AC-DC SMPS applications. Our solutions utilize a leading charge-balancing technology to help designers achieve outstanding reliability. The family offers excellent efficiency and thermal characteristics, making it suitable for a wide range of applications; moreover, its extensive packaging options provide designers with tremendous flexibility, especially in space-constrained designs.

Fairchild Semiconductor was founded in 1957, but to mention Fairchild, one must first mention another story: Dr. W. Shockley, the "father of the transistor," who made "the greatest invention of the 20th century." In 1955, Shockley left Bell Labs and returned to his hometown of Santa Clara, where he founded the Shockley Semiconductor Laboratory. Soon, countless job applications flooded Shockley's desk, drawn by his admiration for the "father of the transistor." The following year, eight young scientists came from the eastern United States to Silicon Valley to join Shockley's laboratory. They were: N. Noyce, R. Moore, J. Blank, E. Kliner, J. Hoerni, J. Last, S. Roberts, and V. Grinich. They were all under 30 years old, in their prime, accomplished, and at the peak of their creative abilities. Among them were individuals with double doctorates, engineers from large corporations, and researchers and professors from prestigious universities—a gathering of the elite never before seen in the American West at the time. 29-year-old Noyce was the eldest of the eight and the most determined to "join" Shockley. Upon arriving in San Francisco, his first act was to spend all his savings to buy himself a place to live, deciding to settle there without considering the work environment, conditions, or compensation. The other seven young men had similar experiences coming to Silicon Valley.

Unfortunately, Shockley, a brilliant scientist, lacked business acumen; he was ambitious but clueless about management. Terman commented, "Shockley was a very attractive figure to talented young people, but they were difficult to work with." Within a year, the lab hadn't produced any decent products. The eight young men, without Shockley's knowledge, began planning their departure. Led by Noyce, they submitted their resignations to Shockley. Shockley, enraged, called them "The Traitorous Eight." The young men looked at each other, but still resolutely left the "mentor" who had drawn them there and brought them together. However, even Shockley himself later changed his tune, calling them "eight rebellious geniuses." In many books and publications in Silicon Valley, photos of the "Traitorous Eight" are considered to be on the same level as photos of HP's garage, possessing the same historical value.
