Basic Information on Fairchild Control Valves
Fairchild control valves, also known as control valves, change fluid flow by receiving control signals output from the control unit.
Fairchild control valves are operated by power to change fluid flow. Control valves generally consist of an actuator and a valve body. Based on the power used by the actuator, control valves can be divided into three types: pneumatic control valves, electric control valves, and hydraulic control valves. Additionally, based on their function and characteristics, they can be divided into three types: linear characteristic, equal percentage characteristic, and parabolic characteristic.
Valve Body Types
Fairchild control valves come in many types of valve bodies. Commonly used types include single-seat straight-through, double-seat straight-through, angle valve, diaphragm valve, small flow valve, three-way valve, eccentric rotary valve, butterfly valve, sleeve valve, and ball valve.
When making a specific selection, the following considerations can be made:
(1) Valve Core Shape and Structure
Mainly based on the selected flow characteristics and unbalanced forces. (2) Wear Resistance
When the fluid medium is a suspension containing a high concentration of abrasive particles, the internal material of the valve must be hard.
(3) Corrosion Resistance
Due to the corrosive nature of the medium, valves with simple structures should be selected whenever possible.
(4) Temperature and Pressure of the Medium
When the temperature and pressure of the medium are high and fluctuate greatly, valves with valve cores and seats whose materials are less affected by temperature and pressure changes should be selected. When the temperature is ≥250℃, a radiator should be added.
(5) Prevention of Flashing and Cavitation
Flashing and cavitation only occur in liquid media. In actual production processes, flashing and cavitation can cause vibration and noise, shortening the service life of valves. Therefore, when selecting valves, flashing and cavitation should be prevented.
Control Valve Actuator
To ensure the normal operation of the control valve, the actuator must be able to generate sufficient output force to guarantee a high degree of sealing and valve opening.
For double-acting pneumatic, hydraulic, and electric actuators, there is generally no return spring. The magnitude of the force is independent of its direction of operation; therefore, the key to selecting an actuator lies in determining the maximum output force and the motor's torque. For single-acting pneumatic actuators, the output force is related to the valve opening degree, and the force exerted on the control valve will also affect its motion characteristics. Therefore, it is necessary to establish force balance across the entire opening range of the control valve.
After determining the actuator's output force, select the appropriate actuator based on the requirements of the process environment. For applications requiring explosion-proof operation, pneumatic actuators should be selected. From an energy-saving perspective, electric actuators should be used whenever possible. For high-precision control, hydraulic actuators can be selected, such as for speed regulation of transparent valves in power plants and temperature control of reactors in catalytic converters in oil refineries.
The operating mode of a control valve is only relevant when selecting a pneumatic actuator. Its operating mode is formed by combining the direct and reverse actions of the actuator and the valve. There are four combinations: direct-direct (air-to-close), direct-reverse (air-to-open), reverse-reverse (air-to-open), and reverse-reverse (air-to-close). The control valve operating modes formed by these four combinations are air-to-open and air-to-close.
