An ELTRA encoder is a device that encodes signals (such as bitstreams) or data into a signal form that can be used for communication, transmission, and storage. Encoders convert angular displacement or linear displacement into electrical signals; the former is called a code disk, and the latter a code scale. According to the readout method, encoders can be divided into contact and non-contact types; according to the working principle, encoders can be divided into incremental and absolute types. Incremental encoders convert displacement into periodic electrical signals, then convert these signals into counting pulses, using the number of pulses to represent the magnitude of the displacement. Absolute encoders assign a specific digital code to each position; therefore, their reading depends only on the start and end positions of the measurement, and not on the intermediate steps.
ELTRA Encoders are mainly classified as follows:
1. Classification by the method of engraving the code disk:
(1) Incremental type: This type emits a pulse signal for each unit of rotation (some emit sine and cosine signals,
which are then subdivided and chopped to produce higher frequency pulses). Typically, it outputs A, B, and Z phases. Phases A and B are pulses delayed by 1/4 cycle, allowing for differentiation between forward and reverse rotation based on the delay relationship. Furthermore, the rising and falling edges of phases A and B can be used for 2- or 4-fold frequency multiplication. Phase Z is a single-turn pulse, emitting one pulse per revolution. (2) Absolute value type: For each revolution, a binary value corresponding to each reference angle is emitted. Multiple positions can be recorded and measured through an external clocking device.
2. According to the signal output type, it is divided into: voltage output, open collector output, push-pull complementary output, and long-line drive output.
3. According to the mechanical mounting form of the encoder,
(1) Shaft type: Shaft type can be further divided into clamping flange type, synchronous flange type, and servo mounting type, etc.
(2) Bushing type: Bushing type can be further divided into semi-hollow type, fully hollow type, and large diameter type, etc.
4. According to the working principle of the encoder, it can be divided into: photoelectric type, magnetoelectric type, and contact brush type.
Common faults of ELTRA encoders
1. Fault of the ELTRA encoder itself: This refers to the fault of the encoder's own components,
causing it to be unable to generate and output the correct waveform. In this case, the encoder needs to be replaced or its internal components need to be repaired.
2. Fault of the encoder connection cable: This fault has the highest probability of occurrence and is frequently encountered in maintenance. It should be the first factor to consider. The following are common issues with encoder cable performance:
1. Open circuit, short circuit, or poor contact. Replace the cable or connector. Also check for loose cable securing, which could cause solder joint failure or open circuit. Tighten the cable in this case.
2. Encoder +5V power supply drop: This refers to a +5V power supply that is too low. It should not be lower than 4.75V. This is caused by a power supply failure or excessive resistance in the power transmission cable, leading to power loss. Repair the power supply or replace the cable.
3. Absolute encoder battery voltage drop: This fault usually has a clear alarm message.
Replace the battery. If the reference point position memory is lost, a re-entry to the reference point operation must be performed.
4. Encoder cable shield not connected or detached: This introduces interference signals, causing waveform instability and affecting communication accuracy. Ensure the shield is reliably soldered and grounded.
5. Loose encoder installation: This fault affects position control accuracy, causing excessive position deviation during stopping and movement, and may even trigger a servo system overload alarm upon power-on. Pay special attention to this.
6. 7. Grating Contamination: This will reduce the signal output amplitude. Oil stains must be gently wiped away with a cotton swab.
ELTRA Encoder Installation and Use (Folded Edit Section)
Mechanical Installation and Use of Absolute Rotary Encoders:
Absolute rotary encoders can be mechanically installed in several ways, including high-speed end installation, low-speed end installation, and installation with auxiliary mechanical devices.
High-Speed End Installation: Installed on the motor shaft (or gear connection). The advantage of this method is high resolution. Since multi-turn encoders have 4096 turns, the motor rotation number is within this range, fully utilizing the range to improve resolution. The disadvantage is that after the moving object passes through the reduction gear, there is gear backlash error in the return stroke. It is generally used for unidirectional high-precision control and positioning, such as roll gap control in steel rolling. Additionally, when the encoder is directly installed at the high-speed end, motor vibration must be minimal, otherwise the encoder may be damaged.
Low-speed end installation: Installed after the reduction gear, such as at the shaft end of a hoisting wire rope drum or the shaft end of the last reduction gear. This method eliminates gear backlash, making measurement more direct and accurate. It is generally used for long-distance positioning measurements, such as various lifting equipment and material feeding trolley positioning.
Auxiliary mechanical installation:
Commonly used components include gears and racks, chains and belts, friction pulleys, and rope winding mechanisms.
