The operating states of an Italian ATOS cartridge valve unit: Let the pressures at ports A, B, and x be pA, pB, and px, respectively, and their effective areas be AA, AB, and Ax, respectively. Let the return spring force at the upper end of the valve core be Ft. When pxAx + Ft > pAAA + pBAB, the valve is closed; when pxAx + Ft ≤ pAAA + pBAB, the valve is open.

In actual operation, the force on the valve core is controlled by the oil flow method at port x.

When x returns to the oil tank, the valve is open;

When x is connected to the inlet port, the valve is closed.

A valve that changes the oil flow method at a port is called a pilot valve.

Applications of Italian ATOS cartridge valves:

A three-way valve consists of two directional valve assemblies connected in parallel, forming one pressure port, one working port, and one return port. The number of operating states of a three-way cartridge valve depends on the number of operating positions of the pilot directional valve.

A four-way valve is composed of two three-way valves connected in parallel.

The pilot valve can be a three-position four-way directional valve (see animation).

The pilot valve can also be two two-position four-way directional valves or four two-position three-way directional valves (see animation).

The number of operating states of a four-way cartridge valve depends on the number of operating positions of the pilot directional valve.
